Set a long term goal (or goals!)

What is your overall goal or goals? Whether it’s to lose 30lbs, save up $10,000, go on more vacations, or even buy a house… what do you want to accomplish before the end of this year? Long term goals are really important because you have to know what you’re working towards. But often times people set a long term goal, and realize it’s not getting anywhere and then give up on it shortly after. This is where short term goals come in.

Set short term goals

Short term goals are just as important, if not more important, than long term goals. They are realistic, small goals that are pretty easily achievable, helping you to stay motivated at working towards your long term goals. For instance, if you want to lose 30lbs this year, your short term goal would be to lose 1-2lbs a week. If you want to save $10,000 this year, start by saving a small amount every paycheck, and adjusting your budget along the way to reach that end goal. Whatever the resolution, set a short term weekly/monthly goal that is realistic. This will help you keep a positive attitude, and you will be more likely to succeed!

Hold yourself accountable

You need to be your own coach, push yourself to achieve your goals and hold yourself accountable. Tell the world about your New Year’s resolutions. They can hold you accountable as well. Plus, you are more likely to reach your goals if people know what they are. You will feel pressured to succeed because there are eyes on you. People are waiting at every turn to see you fail. And if they know about your goals, there will be a burning desire within you to succeed. Personally, I love proving people wrong when they doubt me. Best. Feeling. Ever.

Surround yourself with reasons why you want to succeed

First, you have to really want it. Then, you have to make sure you never lose sight of why you want it. If you want to lose weight, print out a list of what you would have to do to work off that cookie you’re craving. Do you really want to do 50 burpees? NO ONE does. Put a picture of your dream body on your mirror to look at every day. Keep a count down until summer, or your vacation so you can see that you are losing time. If you want to save money, keep a running total of your expenses. When you realize just how much the little things add up, you will probably skip the Starbucks.

Stay organized—Stay motivated

Get a planner that suits your needs. You can track your long term and short term goals. Write down your successes and failures, what works and what doesn’t. Studies show that you are more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. Make working towards your resolutions fun. For the more creative people out there, bullet journals are awesome! They’re like a customizable planner, in which you can track anything and everything. But it’s also more time consuming because it takes a lot of work, which can lead to you giving up on it, and your goals. So don’t do this unless you like that crafty, creative stuff! Another helpful tool is a dry erase board. Hang it in your kitchen, or wherever it’s often visible. Write your daily, or weekly goals on it. Tape your supermodel picture on it. Keep your calorie cheat sheet up there. Write your monthly budget on there. Give yourself a motivational quote to read each day. Anything that will help your to stay motivated, and hold yourself accountable.

Don’t quit when you stray away

If you fall off the path, don’t feel as if you might as well give up. Keep going! Don’t think of it as restarting, think of it as getting back on track. This will make the difference as to whether or not you make your resolution a reality! Just keep going. Failure only happens when you stop trying.

Side note!

If you love planners (like I do) I suggest this Emily Ley Simplified Planner. Not going to lie, they’re pretty pricey. I would not normally buy this expensive of a planner. But, I’m glad I did… here’s WHY!

  1. It’s perfect for my OCD. I’m very picky when it comes to planners. I like it to have monthly, weekly, and daily views. I like it to accommodate my goals, give me a yearly calendar to look at and easy to navigate. The Emily Ley Planner is the first one I’ve found that I’m happy with.
  2. I like supporting fellow entrepreneurs. Ever since I started my own business, I try to support other small business owners, rather than go to Walmart and make them richer. Emily Ley also sells a ton of different paper/organizational products. Check out the website!
  3. Spending a lot of money on something makes me even more motivated to use it. You don’t want to feel as if you threw away money. So this keeps me using my planner, which keeps me accountable, and helps me keep working towards my goals! You might not think that a planner is worth the money, but what about succeeding at your New Year’s resolution? Is that worth the money? Heck yes, it is!

Whatever your resolution might be, you can do this! Just be confident in yourself, and don’t lose sight of your goals. What are your new year’s resolution (or resolutions) for this year? Comment below!
